The Father Joseph Gough Sports Foundation is formulated to develop sports, train trainers, train athletes, provide scholarships, foster community development and provide facilities to schools and communities for youth and sports development.

The foundation is named to honour Father Joseph Gough; an Irish priest who worked in The Gambia for about twelve years (12) as a pastor, educator , coach and "Father" to all Gambians.

Father Gough as everyone called him, is presently livingin his home town, Dublin, Ireland where he teaches at Blackrock College.

He came to The Gambia in 1971. He started the St Michael Seminary in 1972 where he trained the first Gambians to be ordained as priests. He taught at the St Augustines High School throughout his stay in The Gambia, where he was principal from 1978 to 1983.

During his tenure as principal he transformed the school by increasing enrolment from about four hundred (400) to over a thousand (1000) students. He introduced commercial subjects to the curriculum, upgraded the school to 'A' level status, built a new library and science labs and established the first Board of Governors at the school.

He built in the school a covered basketball lawn with fibre glass posts, a gymnasium and transformed the swamps at the back of the school into a football field.

Father Gough was involved in all aspects of Gambian life. He was honoured with the Order of the Republic of The Gambia (ORG). Father Gough is a household name in The Gambia.

The Father Joseph Gough Foundation has been set up to try to emulate and continue the good work Father Gough has done in Ther Gambia. The Manjai football field has been renamed, The Father Joseph Gough Spots Complex. The foundation in association with the Kanifing Municipal Council is presently working on upgrading the football grounds with dressing rooms, pavillions, a modern basketball / volleyball court, multi-purpose hall, a playpen, a gymnasium and a market for the women folk of Manjai / Kotu and Bakoteh at the complex.

Father Gough is the main sponsor of the foundation. He has pledged to support the Foundation for the next four (4) years to develop the facilities at the complex.

The complex is projected to be completed by 2010 and is estimated to cost about fifty million dalasis (D 50,000,000) to build. It will be the first major infrastructural project funded through private donations and community contributions.

When completed, the facilitie will be utilised by the communities of Manjai/Kotu/Bakoteh and Kololi and the scools within these areas.

The foundation will be working with businesses and schools within the community to transform the Father Gough Sports Complex into a vibrant community entity, contributing immensely to the development of the community.

In this regard The Father Joseph Gough Sports Foundation solicits your help and support in its endeavour.
